Mother of 3 Killed, And 5 Wounded By Scorned Man

Fox 2 News Headlines

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) – A mass shooting killed one person and wounded five members of the same family Saturday,

A confrontation led to fight, which ended in gunfire, killing Mary “Unique” Spears.

Afraid to show her face or to go outside her residence, a relative of Spears says that night, she and Spears had just left the funeral of another family member to celebrate his life inside the Joe Louis Post on Sherwood and 7 Mile on Detroit’s east side.

A 38-year-old man inside who her family says they’ve never seen before, began harassing Spears, 27.

“He said, ‘Can I get your name, your number,'” Spears’ relative said. “She said, ‘I have a man I can’t talk to you.'”

But her family says the harassment continued until 2 am when on their way out, they say the man grabbed and hit Spears. Her fiancee confronted him as a fight broke out.

Then suddenly the man began shooting.

Dying To Live In Detroit

Recently, an article by the Detroit News shed light on just how bad it’s gotten in Detroit for the lives of it’s Children. Statistics have shown that Detroit is now considered the deadliest place for American children to live, with the nation’s highest infant mortality rate. With poverty, violence, access to health care and apathy to the system, the children of Detroit face enormous challenges just trying to get through day to day life. Just take a look at these numbers.

In 2010, the most recent year for which data were available, Detroit:

■Tied with Cleveland for the highest infant mortality rate in the nation: 13.5 per 1,000 live births

■Had more births to unmarried women than any major city in the U.S.: 80 percent

■Tied with Cleveland for most preterm births among major U.S. cities: 18 percent

■Had more births to women under 20 than any of the nation’s largest cities: 17 percent

■Had the most teens 16-19 not in school or working: 18 percent

■Had the most kids who live in a home where no parent has full-time, year-round employment: 62 percent

■Had the most kids living in a home where no adult works: 23 percent

■Had the most children living in extreme poverty in the nation: 32 percent

Sources: Kids Count Data Bank, the Annie E. Casey Foundation

Numbers like these are enough to evoke anger, and heartbreak in any sane human being. The questions for us all here now is, What are we going to do about it?
