Michael Sam Seeks To Become First Openly Gay Athlete In Professional Team Sports

You guys are going to have to forgive me for putting this in the Crazy News section. But seeing as how people’s reactions can sometimes be over the top. It just seems appropriate. Michael Sam, All American Defensive Lineman of the University of Mizzouri came out publicly as a gay man, just months before the NFL Draft. Seeking to become the first openly gay athlete in the for major U.S. Sports leagues. In an attempt to get out in front and tell his story before someone did it for him, Sam spoke with ESPN’s Chris Connelly to make the announcement on News magazine “Outside The Lines” to reveal not only that he was gay, but that his teammates have known about it for a year. Here is a brief video of the exchange.

Dying To Live In Detroit

Recently, an article by the Detroit News shed light on just how bad it’s gotten in Detroit for the lives of it’s Children. Statistics have shown that Detroit is now considered the deadliest place for American children to live, with the nation’s highest infant mortality rate. With poverty, violence, access to health care and apathy to the system, the children of Detroit face enormous challenges just trying to get through day to day life. Just take a look at these numbers.

In 2010, the most recent year for which data were available, Detroit:

■Tied with Cleveland for the highest infant mortality rate in the nation: 13.5 per 1,000 live births

■Had more births to unmarried women than any major city in the U.S.: 80 percent

■Tied with Cleveland for most preterm births among major U.S. cities: 18 percent

■Had more births to women under 20 than any of the nation’s largest cities: 17 percent

■Had the most teens 16-19 not in school or working: 18 percent

■Had the most kids who live in a home where no parent has full-time, year-round employment: 62 percent

■Had the most kids living in a home where no adult works: 23 percent

■Had the most children living in extreme poverty in the nation: 32 percent

Sources: Kids Count Data Bank, the Annie E. Casey Foundation

Numbers like these are enough to evoke anger, and heartbreak in any sane human being. The questions for us all here now is, What are we going to do about it?

HIV Positive College Student Films Sex Tapes With 32 Victims

If this isn’t a reason to be thorough, and careful about who you lay down with, I don’t know what is. An HIV positive college student could have knowingly infected more than 30 people with the deadly virus while secretly filming their sex romps on his laptop, police said.

Detroit Police Punches Woman During Arrest

Stories like this happen far too often. But just this Sunday during a traffic stop on 7 Mile Rd. in Detroit, a woman was stopped for expired plates on her car, no insurance, no driver’s license, no registration, and driving without a seat belt. What happens next was something nobody was expecting. But was the officer wrong for his use of force in this situation? You take a look and decide for yourself.

And here is the raw surveillance video of the incident.

Richard Sherman GOES IN on Skip Bayliss of ESPN’s First Take

The Seattle Seahawks have punched their ticket to the Super Bowl, by beating the San Francisco 49ers 23-17. But in the post game interview, Richard Sherman has been getting a lot of unflattering attention because of the comments he made during the post game interview with Erin Andrews. Check this out.
Spirited, and enthusiastic after the win, no doubt. But in the aftermath of that interview, Sherman has been called a lot of different names. “Thug”, “Classless”, “Sore Winner” “Ignorant” and a host of other names, all based on a 30 second interview after what was probably the biggest games of his life against someone he surely doesn’t have the best relationship with. What get’s missed in these psychoanalysis attempts by the layperson is that this is a man who came out of Compton, California, to go on to play football at Stanford University, GRADUATED from Stanford University, and went back for his Master’s Degree during his final year of eligibility at the school. Which totally belies the idea that this man is ignorant, or a “Thug” in the traditional senses of the words.

The following video was produced on in March of 2013, and had nothing to do with the events that transpired during the hoopla surrounding Sherman’s post game interview during the NFC Championship game with the 49ers.

I’m not going to even get into the racial undertones of a lot of the criticism coming his way after that interview. (Besides the name calling, and the calls of Erin Andrews possibly being frightened during said interview.) But Sherman did himself no favors when as a guest on the ESPN show First Take, he goes on a Personal Attack Parade against co-host of the show, Skip Bayless. Going so far as to say “In my 24 years of life, I’m better at life than you.” I’ll reserve my judgment until the next episode of The Spann Report Podcast, but check out this video and make up your own mind. Did Richard Sherman go too far?
